A gas barbeque is much easier to use than a charcoal barbeque. The gas version is much more convenient, and can be used without all the trouble of igniting charcoal. A charcoal barbeque is likely to produce unpleasant smoke, whereas the use of gas is much cleaner.

The food tastes the same whether it is cooked on charcoal or gas and a gas barbeque takes up much less space than the charcoal-burning barbeque equipment. It is also easier and quicker to set up and cook a small amount of food on a gas barbeque. The charcoal set-up takes too long to organise for cooking small amounts.
A problem with cooking on a charcoal barbeque is that the food is sometimes burnt or not fully cooked and this can lead to indigestion or tough, difficult to chew meat and even food poisoning. A gas barbeque gives more precise control over the temperature for cooking the meat properly.

The gas-powered equipment is easier to clean than other types. The easiest types to clean are those made of stainless steel.

Cost is a consideration but, even though the gas equipment may cost more than charcoal burning types of barbeque, the running costs are likely to be lower.

When looking on the Internet for one to buy, bear in mind the spelling can vary. From a logical point of view, BBQ should be spelt 'barbeque', as this includes a 'q', but 'barbecue' is more common, and both are acceptable spellings. 'Bar-B-Q' and 'Bar-B-Que' are also sometimes used.

It's best to read the instructions supplied with the unit before buying a barbeque. Check what extras are needed and what consumables will have to be purchased.

The gas barbeque grills use lava rocks as a secondary heating element. The lava rocks act like charcoal and look rather like charcoal. Although charcoal cannot be used again, the lava rocks can be used several times. They will then need to be replaced.
Gas barbeque manufacturers provide instructions concerning the cleaning and replacement of the lava rocks. Rocks with too much grease attached to them can catch fire and burn the food. Turning the rocks over occasionally improves their efficiency.
The instructions usually indicate that the rocks should be replaced when they break up or start to look dirty.
Barbecues are designed to be used outdoors. Although it may be possible to use some types of gas barbeque in an open garage, bear in mind that fumes are given off that can be hazardous in enclosed spaces.

Barbecues of all types tend to get neglected during parts of the year when the weather is not suitable for outdoor cooking. It's important to clean it before use. Old accumulations of deposits on the grill can catch fire, or combine with water and other substances to produce corrosive chemicals. These can then contaminate the food being cooked on the barbeque.
When considering a purchase, take note of the type of gas needed for the barbeque being considered. It's best to be sure that replacement gas cylinders can easily be obtained locally. The instructions will explain how the cylinder is to be attached safely.

The smallest and cheapest gas barbeques are the small portable cookers. These run on disposable gas cylinders. The next size up takes the small cylinders that, when empty, are exchanged for replacement full ones.

The larger gas cylinders used for family-sized grills are quite heavy, and add substantially to the weight of the barbeque. However, many of the larger barbeques have wheels, so the whole unit can be moved easily without lifting.
